The Cover Fairy Strikes Again: Introducing the UK Cover!

February 15, 2017

She's come, she's come! And she's left a beautiful surprise in my inbox.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. As an author, one of the best moments of the prepublication process is seeing the cover of your book for the first time. It honestly feels like being a kid on Christmas morning. Suddenly you can see what your book will look like sitting on the bookstore shelves. And if you are lucky enough to sell your book in multiple territories, you sometimes get multiple covers to look forward to. So I am thrilled to introduce...the UK cover, with design by Sophie Burdess and illustration by Dan Evans!

Ready, set...TA-DA!

One more time, a little bit bigger, for the folks in the back...

There are so many things I love about the cover Orchard have come up with. Can we start with Ethan's untied shoelace? What a wonderful, endearing detail. The bird, who is flying away like it's just experienced some big disturbance, adds a great static energy, I think. The tagline, also in a bold yellow, creates an immediate sense of suspense. While the tree harkens to something that happens in wintery Boston, I think the aqua blue is suggestive of the warm, beachside town where Ethan moves at the beginning of the story. And have you SEEN how ominous that tree is? I find it really lovely that both this cover and the U.S. cover include silhouettes and have a focus on trees, but that's really where the similarities end.

That's one of the coolest bits about having multiple covers. You can compare interpretations of your novel and see how differently individual artists choose to represent your story visually. These covers are very different, but I find them both incredibly compelling.

So bravo, and huge thanks to Sophie Burdess, Dave Evans, and the whole Orchard team for doing such an amazing job on this gorgeous cover!!!
